Ponce de Leon Motive for Travel
Ponce de Leon was a Spanish explorer. He was given the right to
find Bimini, an island in the Bahamas. He was in search of the "Fountain of
Youth" that was allegedly in Bimini. It was a legend that whoever drank the
water, would never grow old. This expedition took place in March 1513. On his
journey, he landed near, what is today St. Augustine, Florida. He named it
Florida because he saw lots of flowers and Florida means flower in Spanish. He
claimed the land for the King of Spain. In 1508 he led an expedition to Puerto
Rico, here he discovered gold, and conquered the Indians living there.
